How to pass the North Dakota knowledge test
- Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official North Dakota manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
- Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes North Dakota law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
- Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
- Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Car. NDDOT offers the Class D knowledge test at a driver license site or online through its KnowTo Drive platform, but neither the Noncommercial Driver License Manual nor the NDDOT web pages publish the item count or pass mark, so the figures shown are listed as unconfirmed. Age 14 is the minimum age for an instruction permit.
Motorcycle. Applicants without a valid North Dakota Class A, B, C or D license must pass the Class D knowledge test and hold a Class D permit before taking the Class M knowledge test. NDDOT does not publish the item count or pass mark for the Class M test, so the figures shown are listed as unconfirmed. Riders aged 14 or 15 must also be enrolled in or have completed an approved motorcycle safety course.
CDL. The North Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual confirms that a Class A, B or C license cannot be issued below age 18 except at 16 for custom harvesting, and that age 21 is required to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines. It does not publish the number of items or the pass mark for the general knowledge test, so those figures follow the common federal 80 percent standard and are listed as unconfirmed.
